Let's Talk

Building Language Moments At Home

Speech TherapistDr Sandra McMahon PhD

Do you want to make sure you are giving your babies and toddlers the best chance to have later academic success. Do you want them to have social confidence so they can build friendships?  How and what we say to our children in the early years has been shown to have a major impact in the school years. Researchers call this “parentese” – the speech of parents.

The key is to talk to children from birth. Is some talk better than other talk though? Do some parent’s do it better than others?

“Your talk” ideally should closely match your child’s understanding and talking levels. A mis-match can result in wasting valuable everyday learning opportunities for your child. How complex your sentences and words are and your child’s current language skills need to grow together.

You can use everyday routines to provide the optimum language examples for your child. This will provide them with the best learning foundations that will impact on their development for many years to come.

The way parent's can help children to talk more:

The parent's speech matching the child's level of talking is SO important the First STEPS in our FOCUS on TODDLER TALK Online Program guides you in how to find out what level your childs current communication skills are at and to see if the speech you are using in your everyday talk is at the right level!

Are you SURE you are using the most effective parentese for your child?

The program shows you how to change your talk as your childs understanding, speech and language grows.

Your talk needs to continually stay in sync with your child to give them the best opportunity to succeed and prevent behaviours of frustration.

BUT I am so busy!, says every mum, dad and carer of babies and toddlers.

That is why we have developed communication BOOSTER MOMENTS.

Of course at first it is hard to think about your level of speech all day and every day (but with the online program you can see how easy it really is!).

Just a KEY MOMENT in your busy routine that you can quickly and easily adapt what you are already doing to FOCUS on language in that moment. This is how you will know you are doing the very best for your child.

Children thrive and can learn through routines at home. While many days can be hectic with babies and toddlers, there  are a few things that will generally always happen.   Find ONE MOMENT in a routine that you can adapt the words and routine. Even a ever so slight change  will potentially sky rocket your child’s speech, language and learning skills.

Write down what you will do and say in that MOMENT to boost speech.

There are so many moments in the home that can turn everyday talk into natural learning moments. It is too hard to think you will script or change your whole routine – just one moment is a fantastic start. Let’s look at a Language BOOSTING MOMENT”. See our Tooth brushing Download for ideas of how to change your "parentese" depending on your child's current communication levels. Don't waste another moment. Grab the download, pop it in the bathroom for all parents, grandparents or carers to see. This will ensure that this moment is reinforced every time the same way!

It is universally recognised that starting a teeth cleaning routine from as young as the emersion of that first tooth is essential.

The actual routine may change from home to home. Some children think it’s a highlight of the night and others it is like ”pure torture”.  Having a very precise routine for children can help. Letting the children participate as much as they are able helps give them a feeling of control over the process. Let’s take just a MOMENT in the tooth brushing routine & turn it into a LANGUAGE BOOSTING MOMENT.

The MOMENT we put toothpaste onto the brush. It is easier for us to just put the paste on our selves right? We don't want the child squeezing enormous amounts of toothpaste everywhere!  If you work together you can build independence and create a language booster MOMENT.

Make it your job to squeeze a little toothpaste out of the tube so it is just popping up out of the tube. It is then your child’s job to “dip” the bristles of the brush into the toothpaste. This is so easy and everyone knows their role! You might have to help children do the dipping when they are younger. Help them hold the brush and direct their hand to the tube. Children will generally catch on from a very early age!

As they dip the brush use the same words EVERYTIME!

Use our FOCUS ON TODDLER TALK program to help you determine your child's speech levels.

Then "write a script" you can use in this language MOMENT. The FREE TOOTHBRUSH DOWNLOAD will give you examples of scripts depending on your child's communication level.

Examples of Scripts to help children to talk in the home:

If your child is not saying any words yet you can get them to imitate the dipping action.

If they are imitating actions but not sounds encourage them to say "d,d,d,d" as you dip.
If they are saying sounds but not words, model the full word: "dip, dip, dip" .

If they are saying words encourage longer sentences e.g., "dip in", "more on".

Build longer and longer sentences as your child's communication skills build. Remember try to match you child's level to the words you use! It is the same moment but the language levels develop over time.

NOW! Let’s put a Speech and Language BOOSTER onto this MOMENT.
