Speech Clarity - Speech Development & Difficulties
Speech sounds develop at different ages. A speech assessment will determine which speech sounds are being said correctly and if the errors are OK for their age. Speech clarity develops by learning the rules of putting sounds together to form words (phonological processes). These rules mature with age. An assessment will determine if the rules used are within expected levels for a child's age (e.g., leaving off the ends of words).
By 2 years of age a child's speech is typically intelligible 75% of the time by someone that does not know them well. If you are interpreting for them a lot - they may need a speech assessment. Most sounds are said correctly by 5 with only a few sounds (e.g., th) still developing to 5-6 years of age.
